Note titles that survive exam season
Your future self, cramming at midnight before the final, needs to find the right notes in seconds. Here is how to title study notes so the archive works when it matters most.
The course-code-first rule
Every academic note title should start with the course: BIO101 — Cell Division Summary, ECON202 — Midterm Study Guide. Course codes are short, unique, and exactly what you will search during exam week. If your notes app supports tags or folders, the course code in the title still helps — it makes every search result self-identifying.
Lecture notes: date everything
Lectures blur together; dates do not. PSYCH150 — Lecture 07: Memory Models (Oct 14) beats psych notes by a mile. Number lectures sequentially when you can — "Lecture 07" tells you instantly whether you missed one. If the professor posts slides, mirror their numbering in your titles so notes and slides line up.
Study guides: name the scope
A study guide title should say what it covers and what it is for: CHEM201 — Final Exam Study Guide: Chapters 8–12. Scope in the title prevents the classic panic of opening a "study guide" and discovering it covers the wrong chapters. Add the target grade or goal if it motivates you — SPAN101 — Final: Going for an A — but keep the scope factual.
Summaries: "key concepts" is your friend
When condensing a chapter or unit, titles like HIST210 — The Cold War: Key Concepts & Timeline signal density. Future-you knows this is the distilled version, not the raw dump. Keep one raw-notes file and one summary file per unit, titled to match — the pair is the study system.
Group study notes
Shared study docs need the course code plus the group or session: CS101 — Study Group Session 3: Recursion. Agree on the pattern once at the start of the semester. Everyone's contributions land in one findable place instead of five "study stuff" docs.
Make it stick: the weekly title audit
Once a week, spend five minutes scanning your recent titles. Rename the vague ones ("notes", "stuff", "untitled") while you still remember what they contain. This tiny habit compounds: by finals, your archive titles itself. For inspiration on the wording, run the generator on study-note mode with your course as the subject.
